About Us

The word Trenza means “braid” in Spanish. The concept of intertwining strands wrapping together to create a multi-dimensional creation is a theme woven throughout the entire site. From the graphic layout, infused with images of woven fabric to the diversity of content that pulls from many media outlets, to the network of people involved in the project, the goal of this site is to knit together a network of people that live in the pulse of the global urban culture.

Trenza strives to bring timely coverage from the lifestyles of global urban tastemakers. It is our belief that the lifestyles of these social misfits, “creative underclass”, bohemians (choose a term), very cool people, in fact converge and blend with each other and if they only knew about each other, what a powerful network of progressive thinking people they would create. We are interested in the lives of people that swim upstream. We are interested in the characters that break trends and many times knowingly or unknowingly create new ones.

Coverage

Fashion
If the misfits from “Jem and the Holograms” had a fashion showroom, it's address would bewww.trenzaonline.com Street. This is the catwalk for the designers that cut patterns in their attics and show their pieces on street corner wardrobe racks and benefit fashion shows. Their friends model their work the world’s stage.

There is a sick ass hair stylist that cuts and colors hair in her living room. She hand sews hairpieces for the six-foot trannies on the 5th floor. Her hands can do anything. What's her deal? And why doesn't she have an agent?

To the makeup artists that daylight behind the counter in Bloomingdale’s Soho and create glamazons from papier-mâché eyelids and acne-prone skin, what’s next?

Travel

When your friends from Queens treks to Brooklyn, where did you take them? If your international myspace pen pal from Sweden came to visit, where would they
stay? Probably not the Waldorf Astoria, right? What happened when you hopped on the LIRR last weekend; where did you go and did you get food poisoned? On your last visit to London, did you discover the next great British punk band? Tell us about it.

I know a DJ that spinned house music in Phuket for three weeks. He said that honeymooners from Britain should have spoken with him before buying their tickets. The streets smell like sex and the women have dark hair down their backs and love foreign accents. Not really a place for the just married crowd, huh? Maybe he'll post an article in our travel section and warn the others.

Culture

If I opened your bag, what book would I find? Whose opening are you going to this weekend? Do you know a group of artists that work, play and live in a 20x20 loft/dorm in Bushwick. What the hell is going on in there?

The music section of the culture department is a place we broadcast the sounds of this scene and tell the stories of the artists that make them.

My friend Katie Eastburn played the Bowery Ballroom some time back and just came off a cross-country tour. She helps junior high school girls write songs and has a cat name “Mau Mau”. She drinks whiskey on stage and plays her piano under the light of handed down lamp. in the culture section you might be able to find out where she'll be next and why.

Foodie + Drinkie

We’re trying to bring the sometimes high-brow discussion of food to a tangible level. Less Gourmet Magazine and more Weird Science.

I know a place to eat Mediterranean food called Hoo-Moos Ali, but you’ll be shot if you order hummus, it’s pronounced Hoo-Moos. Best pita in life! There is a raven hair girl who works there, she treated my friends and I to Turkish coffee that was spiced with cardamom. In Hebrew, she told me I had an infectious laugh. I wish I could remember how she said it. Anyway, it's in Soho, NYC and the models and fashionistas that gather across the street at La Esquina, don't bother with it. The people that work there are interesting and genuine.

Toys and Games
This is a section speaking to video game heads, skateboarders, snowboarders, drag racers, surfers, chopper dudes, BMXers, basically adults playing or anyone who might be curious. Gamestress X, secret mole to the video game world, holds it down. She contributes regularly and is AMAZING!!! She's the chick that could murder any dude in any videogame at any time... no really.
